Identity

Thymalin is not a single peptide. It is a low-molecular-weight polypeptide complex extracted from calf thymus, developed in the Soviet Union in the 1970s and 1980s. It is the parent preparation from which the defined short peptides of the Khavinson series were subsequently derived.

Molecular target

No single defined molecular target. Because the material is an extract fraction rather than a pure compound, its composition varies with the preparation, and this is the central caveat in interpreting any result obtained with it.

Signalling pathway

The published work reports effects on T-lymphocyte differentiation and on the CD4/CD8 ratio in ageing models. Mechanistic description is at the level of the preparation rather than of a molecule, and no receptor or binding partner has been isolated.

Research context

Russian-language clinical and gerontological literature, largely from the 1980s through the 2000s, including long-term cohort follow-ups reported alongside Epithalamin. Independent replication outside that literature is limited.
