Identity

Pancragen is the tetrapeptide Lys-Glu-Asp-Trp (KEDW), the member of the Khavinson series assigned to pancreatic tissue. The terminal tryptophan makes it one of the few members of the series with an aromatic residue, which is relevant to the spectroscopic methods used to study its DNA binding.

Molecular target

No receptor. The series is proposed to act by entering the nucleus and binding at specific promoter sequences and to histone proteins.

Signalling pathway

The published readouts for this peptide are in pancreatic islet and beta-cell preparations, where the reported outcome is changed expression of insulin and of transcription factors associated with beta-cell identity. The tryptophan residue has been used as an intrinsic fluorophore in binding studies, so the DNA-interaction evidence for this member is somewhat more direct than for others.
