Identity

Pinealon is the tripeptide Glu-Asp-Arg (EDR), composed of L-glutamic acid, L-aspartic acid and L-arginine. Within the Khavinson series it is the peptide assigned to brain and pineal tissue. It is a separate compound from Epithalon (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly), with which it is frequently confused in secondary sources.

Molecular target

No receptor. The proposed mechanism is nuclear penetration followed by binding at promoter sequences and to histone proteins. Of the series, Pinealon is the member for which cell-penetration and nuclear-localisation work has been most often reported, using labelled peptide in neuronal culture.

Signalling pathway

Published readouts concern transcription of genes associated with the oxidative stress response and with neuronal survival. The models most often used apply hypoxia or a chemical oxidative insult and measure expression and viability endpoints rather than any signalling intermediate.

Research context

Primary neuron and neuroblastoma culture, and rodent hypoxia models, predominantly from the originating group. As of 2026 the evidence base for the series is in vitro and rodent work only.
